The woman laughed nervously, and dragged her eyes away from the boy's, returning her interest to the scrolling landscape. "It's a fair piece, I suppose. We'll be four hours out of Dallas, by the time we get there."
"Why didn't you drive your own car?"
She sighed now, and eased back into her comfortable seat, her gaze falling dark, while her face turned away from the boy. Patting her purse, which sat in the window seat beside her, she breathed delicately, "I sold it like I sold almost everything I own."
Micah eyed his new companion blankly for several long seconds, as he politely waited for her to elaborate. When her reticence lingered, he prodded with, "Why would you do that?"
Apparently having forgotten his presence, Janice started with a jerk. "What?"
