"Once you handle the child, yourself, for a time, you may not be so surprised." He paused for affect, indeed, until his guest turned to face him curiously. "A true sociopath cannot be treated, you see. A true sociopath can only be isolated and handled as delicately as possible, with all thought to security and safety. In this case, security and safety can only be found in the boy's discharge."
"Is it as simple as that, doctor? Can you give up and cast him aside so easily?"
"Don't play the bleeding heart with me, Ms. Jones, and don't judge us. I have already admitted our failure here, you may recall, and it is our great shame. None of us preferred that it end this way, but we have all reached our collective limits. Since we are legally, if not ethically, empowered to do so, we WILL discharge the boy, as soon as possible. This is not a subject of debate."
For the first time, anger flashed across the young lady's face. "Well, doctor, as my father might have said, that's a hell of a note! He's so dangerous that skilled, educated professionals are afraid to handle him, but you want to let him loose on society."
Doctor Garcia glanced away, ashamed. "It's awful, I know, and I hope you will understand that it is not my natural character, nor that of my staff. We do this only for good reason and after sound consideration."
