"We should not be on alert, at all," replied the machine, using a synthetic rendition of his own voice. "We should all be dead. This warp ship should be nothing more than drifting space junk."

"Yet, it is not." Master Control's reply was unemotional, and so seemed borne of infinite patience. "We are intact. All vital systems have been repaired and are currently functional. This expedition is green and go."

"This expedition is an unending nightmare."

The Brigantine's systems were silent for some time. He wondered briefly if the vast ship was poised to crush him for a gnat.

Then Master Control announced, "Your presence in this chamber has triggered a system address. Please stand-by for autonomous replay."
