Stephen Huff's
EVER CONSTANT BY CLOUDS
Wednesday, June 30, 2004

the cool easy gray of summer storms
soothe me in this place
where water is a daily topic
where surf is a low, shallow din
in this place where the skies may be blue upon white
where the heavens may gush a flood
in this place where I am surrounded
by green growing things that never pass on
foundling of the concrete tapestry
spread as a cancer across the sprawl of the earth
I linger near windows
where I watch angry clouds crawl
central and distant a canopy overall
and vain as the wasted raindrops that fill puddles
but only for a time
as everything drains sure in this place
otherwise we all should drown
in this place ruled ever constant by clouds
