COLLEEN REED

did he really do it?
did he beat her that way?
did he really rape her repeatedly?
did he really choke her dead?
the horror belies the shock
or perhaps the shock mutes the horror
to consider his presence
at the car wash
to think of her first sight of pending death
his hand so quick to her throat
his grip so God damned fast
her screams to wake the sleeping
her wails to drum the dead
and him dragging her to his car
kicking for her life without effect
then, in the back seat of that Ford,
the two of them at her again and again
their sex something monstrous
their amusement beyond the pale of sins
and afterward when she was pleading
for her life as she inevitably must
how he, callous and cold hearted,
said he was going to ‘use her all up’
thank God for justice in Texas
thank God for needles and men
who unafraid took the handle in hand
and at last put that dog to its ugly end
