Stephen Huff's
THEY NEVER WERE
Wednesday, January 15, 2004

they are but a moment of hugs and kisses
mere hours of bustle and stir
they are ten minutes of reminiscence
and then they never were
they are one thousand miles of pavement
yet an instance on the phone
they are so close that I may touch them
the briefest torture I have known
they are beyond my reach to salvage
though still near enough to need
they are once more gone tomorrow
and a wound that must ever bleed
they are a dog’s tail to wag for days
or a cat’s relaxing purr
they have come to visit briefly, I say,
and then they never were
