Chapter 1 Page 38
Recensio sent the runner on his way, and watched him rush from site to site for a time. Half or more of his stops were met with a disturbing silence. The merchant cinched his collar higher and scurried for his own tents.
There he found his three men stirring about in the drizzle unhappily. Upon spying him, their faces brightened perceptibly. "Sir!" called Vincente, his first man. "We thought- well, we thought you were laying dead in a ditch, somewhere. I almost sent Carlo along to find your corpse!"
Ordinarily, he might have chuckled at Vincente's concern, but not tonight. "Trouble's a'foot, fellows. We must break camp and make our way out of the city."
"What is the matter?"
"We are beset by plague, apparently. Marcus Lexicus has advised me to sell my goods and flee to the mountains with all haste." His men gasped. "I will not heed him, naturally. Nevertheless, we will have more than we can manage, since Silvio will likely die. He has bequeathed his share to me. This, we will carry down to the market for after hours sale."
