Yet, he watched her climb to the rail, and he said nothing as she tilted backward over the side. He went to the rail, and he watched her drop away into the darkness. She was a pebble that would disappear from the edge of the planet without a sound or a ripple to mark its passage. His teardrops followed her for a time, as if he might reach for her and pluck her from the sea with the strength of his rage and shame and remorse and sorrow.
Then he shifted the weight of his pack. He started relentlessly east again.
