Chapter 5 Page 15
Byron's heart limped along, struggling with the sudden, crushing pain of it all. He wished she would stop now; he wanted to shout that she had gone far enough. Yet, she wouldn't, and she hadn't, and he knew it.
"I just wish, you know," she sighed at last, her voice earnest and frustrated and defeated. "I just wish I could make all these people see. I wish I could make them see Chiggy like that, and me standing over him and his rats. I'm just so tired. I'm so tired of being this person that I am."
"I know, Shelly, but it's alright. You're not alone. I'm here."
"Yeah, like I was there for Chiggy. Like all these people are here for us now." She grunted derisively, and shifted her unbearable burden. "The only way you could get one of those bastards to stop for a moment is with your dead body. And we're no better. Maybe we're worse. I don't know."
"There's no such thing as better or worse. We're all just people, each in our own pair of shoes."
