Byron shook his head, and turned his eye on the sun. It was setting on the waters, so it's light smeared over the length of bay like a bloody trail of mayhem and sanguine murder.
It would be night soon. Too soon. Yet they had far, far to go. He suddenly felt very small indeed.
To dispel the darkness, he felt bound to offer up, "It was a bad way to go. Even for one of us." He shuddered.
"Death is death, Byron. We're dying, all of us, a little each day. Sometimes all at once in an instant. There are worse things than dying."
He was skeptical, and he must have made a scoffing noise with his mouth, because her eyes flashed that cold, hard light of anger that told him the next step was a step too far. "There are, Byron, and you know it. The needle. The needle is worse than death. Right?"
