Kendrick's Monster
His Apical Sin
Chapter 1 Page 8
There! At his back!
A demon's form, sharp and angular with bony joints and horny projections, swelled up from the obsidian hulk of his shadow. As a horrid entity borne of a crumpled chrysalis, it emerged from his back to spread its benighted wings wide beneath the moon's oblivious glow.
How it screeched and bellowed! How it roared! With its long, black arms, and its cruelly pointed talons, it throttled him from behind. It clung tenaciously to his back, despite his violent struggles, and it would not let go of his neck. His throat constricted painfully beneath its throttle, his eyes bulged, and his face purpled. His vision swam with brilliant, flashing, streaking stars, even as it faded to black around a single pinpoint of light.

Kendrick lay alone in his apartment on the mussed sheets of his queen-size bed, his fingers laced behind his head, his eyes open and fixed on the textured ceiling. The world spun beneath him. He felt the mechanical movements of the planet rumble beneath his back.
The world jerked along, second by second. A noon sun burned bright and fierce outside his heavily shaded windows.
