He gritted his teeth and clenched his eyes tightly shut. With his elbows, he folded his pillow around his head to cover his ears.

'What will they care, when you have gone? Will they remember your name? Will they celebrate what you have done?' His monster snorted and chuckled derisively. 'No. You are scant seconds. You are a moment's ponder, an instant's consideration. You are an infinitesimal speck of dust amid a wide world of dirt. When you are gone, you are, at best, a stone to weather the wind and rain for a time, before you are nothing at all. No one will miss you. No one will mourn your absence. No one will care to know who you were.'

Breathing tortuously through broadly flared nostrils, he choked on impotent rage. "I won't listen! I won't listen! I won't listen!"

'You,' hissed the devil, 'Are forgetfulness. While I… I am history walking.'

"YOU!" Kendrick raged, his voice muffled by the folds of his pillow, "Are NOTHING! You are a figment of my imagination!"
