Damon watched the show with undisguised relish. His mother took him by the shoulder and gently pushed him toward the car, where his siblings were already waiting there anxiously for their mother.
As they all tumbled into the car, Damon lingered on the driveway, his eyes greedily fixed on the weeping woman and her consoling husband. Even as he watched, their voices began to rise in pitch and intensity. They exchanged insults, and the man soon rose to stalk across the street angrily. On his way up the slope of his lawn toward his front door, he made obscene gestures with his hands and repeatedly called the woman a 'whore', 'slut' and other names that Damon could not decipher.
Though Mrs. Blackley called his name repeatedly, Damon would not comply with her commands to get into the car. He stood motionless, enthralled, and heedless. Exasperated, she pushed open her own car door, again, and climbed out to push him into the rear seat. "It's not polite to stare," she scolded, buckling his seatbelt, though he was capable of doing this for himself.
Distracted from the scene by the ensuing silence of its aftermath, Damon asked his mother, "Why were there three of them, mommy?"
His mother snapped the belt latch into place, and paused a moment to observe the boy keenly. Damon's eyes dismayed her, for, though his face remained passive, innocent and angelic, his gaze burned with an odd, feral light. They were, she thought, the eyes of a sadist that gloats over misery.
