"But you just said these foothills are empty of peoples. Where do the milts and such come from, then?"

"They are bred for war and servitude in the lands of Bac Tur, though they are not free to roam wildly as are the illdross and jetlas of the greater Wilderlands. The cursed overlord of that nation keeps his subjects like cattle, and uses magic to both speed their development and enhance their powers. One rarely encounters lowly milts in this portion of the world, in fact. Here, the higher forms predominate."

Epsilon shrugged cavalierly. "I do not fear jetlas."

Ubar's tone sounded only mildly chiding. "You may fear what they next become, however; ugluck and shail and rhiners and the occasional illdross, the latter of which Sin Supri employs as couriers and far ranging spies. Each molt more powerful and skilled in the arts than the one before. Even you, Holy Warfarer, would be dismayed to face down a rhiner in single combat." Ubar smiled toothily to soften the blow of his voiced doubts, but Epsilon did not seem to be concerned. "Fortunately for us, the rhiners typically serve in a high capacity, and so are rarely encountered while ranging abroad. They are the Enemy's general officers, so to speak."

"Have you ever seen one, I wonder?"
