Examining the receipt item by item, Christen compared the purchases to the shopping list. He had been thorough, missing nothing.
Lowering his hands, defeated, Christen returned to the kitchen, where he opened all the cabinets and drawers. Hoping to find them empty or stocked with common kitchenwares, Christen was not surprised to find them filled with bleaches, detergents, solvents and other organic goods, including a surprising quantity of corn syrup and cotton wadding. The pantry contained various undiluted acids, a case of lye, and one large container of mercury. All the jars and jugs bore the skull-and-bones and bright orange warning labels.
Christen exhaled slowly, amazed. "What have I been doing?"
The brass knocker of the front door sounded three times loudly. Christen jumped and squealed, slamming the pantry door shut with a startled jerk of his right arm. His heart raced painfully, while his head swam dizzily.
Stumping across the floor as quietly as he dared, Christen put his eye to the peephole, as the knocker sounded again three times in rapid succession. On the other side of the door, a lone figure with a massive, mushroom-shaped head stood swaying back and forth impatiently. Before Chris could fumble the chain lock loose and open the door, the knocker sounded a third time.
