'A demon's genesis is a matter of chance, much as its fate, and God is nothing if not the master of chance. He fashioned her life in the circumstances of her birth and the consequences of her actions, rendering her a bitter, resentful, misanthropic individual burdened with an unwanted child born of an unholy forced union with her own father, who beat and raped her regularly as a child. In her son, she saw her greatest torment and her deepest longing, for she both loathed and loved her father, who represented the source of everything good and bad in her life.

'While her father remained beyond the reach of her hatred, their bastard son was always available. Eventually, the unfortunate boy bore the totality of her rage, which malformed and twisted him indecently, wringing all nascent humanity from his soul, leaving it naked and vulnerable to an evil habitation. With each stroke of the extension cord, with every slap of his face, with every meal denied and every foul curse uttered, she pressed her malignant hands against the levers of God's machines until she had stamped out a remorseless, conscienceless murderer.'

'Why would God allow the boy's mother to treat him so badly all those years?'

'That she should become for him the same concept of love and hate that her father had been for her. Imagine the consequences of his response to the discovery of his mother lying dead on the floor of their shared kitchen. Rage and frustration must swell to monstrous proportions, and he must lash out angrily at the world. Many will die.'

As always, Christen felt stunned and confused. He repeated himself numbly. 'Why?'
