"But you don't have a home to go to?"
"That's right. My wife is divorcing me. She filed a restraining order that prohibits me from approaching our residence."
"What about friends and family? Don't you have anyone you can call to help you through the next few weeks?"
Christen swallowed stiffly, and struggled against an overwhelming surge of self-pity. "No," he returned softly. "My friends are all her friends, and they won't talk to me. My family is all gone, dead."
"I see. That leaves you in a precarious position, doesn't it?" Her smile returned, and he found it incongruously pleasant, given his surroundings. "The good news," she announced brightly, "Is that this is the worst of it. Admittedly, this must seem like a low spot in your life, and I guess it is, but it could be much, much worse, Mr. Bass. You must remain positive."
