She prepared to stand, and his heart thumped slow and heavy. "Before I go, Mr. Bass, may I ask a personal question?"
"Certainly," he returned happily, though her expression had fallen flat and earnest. "Ask anything you like."
"Are you sure? It might be a bit painful for you." When he nodded eagerly, encouraging her, Rachel asked, "What was it like? Do you remember anything, at all?"
He was taken aback. "What was what like?" he wondered witlessly.
"Death."
