5. Beyond the Veil

She came to him in a carefully crafted moment. Administrative representatives of the hospital had visited him earlier in the morning to inform him of his pending release. They had said nothing about his continued care, and they didn't address the fact that he was homeless and virtually helpless. His physician remained conspicuously absent through the early afternoon, while the orderlies and nurses all curtly informed him that somebody would tend to him soon.

A week previously, they replaced his rotting casts with smaller, lighter fiberglass splints, so Christen was able to leverage his aching bones into a wheelchair, where he sat until three in the afternoon, biting his lip. He might have chewed his nails, but he couldn't flex his hands to his mouth.

Outside, beyond the blinded windows of his room, a brilliant sun alternated between gray, obscuring clouds and clear blue sky. He guessed the wind was blowing fiercely out there, as the fickle light danced with countless shadows cast by swaying tree limbs. The thought of such movement pained him deeply, as he felt the limited constriction of his broken bones and atrophied muscles. His heart surged anxiously. Where would he go? How would he survive? Who would help him?

As he wallowed in the dismal charnel pit that was his looming future, she came to him in a carefully crafted moment. "Mr. Bass?" she wondered brightly, lightly rapping the door to his room with delicate knuckles.

Christen glanced up to see her genuine smile, and his heart thrilled. He found her beauty angelic and hypnotic.
