"Of course," returned the female nonchalantly. Noticing Christen's awareness, she leaned closer, pried his puffy eyelids open, and flashed a light into his eyes. "Hi, there!" she enthused, "How do you feel?"

Christen worked his throat and tongue to no effect. His eyes rolled to avoid the blinding, excruciating light.

"Do you know where you are, Mr. Bass? Can you tell me what day it is?"

Christen wondered if she could see the tubes they had crammed down his throat. Unable to speak, he attempted to waggle his head back and forth, only to find it was bolted into a large, cubic fame and thereby completely immobilized. Frustrated, he wondered how he should answer her.
