In the last moment, her fingers fell into his with a sensation that ascended merely mortal contact. As a spark leaps a gap, he felt himself bond to her, to the entire universe, where it brooded beyond human understanding, where it waited beyond a final gasp and a last, sluggish pulse. Before his eyes, the awe of eternity churned in a timeless spiral amid an unfathomable void, and he knew he could touch it all with a single thought.
Into the piercing brilliance of her warm, affectionate smile, Christen hissed, "I knew you would come," with his last breath. On a sputter, he died.
